Tompion was a most exquisite mechanic, proud of his work and jealous of his name.

On some of the latest clocks by Tompion, dated about 1709, four years before his death, such an arch is found.

There are long-case clocks made by Tompion to be found in this country; for of course all the first clocks were of English make.

The earliest long-case clocks were made by William Clement about 1680, and within the same year Tompion was making them too.

Some of these tall clocks made by Tompion ran a year without winding.
