lupanar

Queen Joanna of Naples made ordinances for a lupanar at Avignon, in 1347, when it was the papal residence.

In the lupanar, of course, rules regarding costume were unheeded.

Just at their junction, and having an entrance into both, stands the Lupanar, from which the latter street derives its name.

Their name, fornices, at last became synonymous with lupanar, and we have borrowed from it our generic word fornication.

It was only the ignorant lower middle-class of England that thought France was a mighty lupanar and adultery a joke.
