cunctator

Fabius Cunctator, or the Delayer, so called from the policy of delay which he opposed to the vigorous movements of Hannibal.

He fought again at Cannae, and was, with the son of old Fabius Cunctator, among the very few young officers who escaped alive.

Hence he received that new name, so salutary to the commonwealth, of Cunctator, or Delayer.

But no one was ever more undecided than the famous cunctator.

He was justly compared to Fabius Maximus, distinguished by the epithet of Cunctator.
