The active ingredient is Benzyl Nicotinate (niacinamide), part of the drug group of vasodilators that widen blood vessels.

The first of these is benzyl chloride, the second benzal chloride, and the third benzotrichloride or phenyl chloroform.

The first step is to chlorinate ordinary toluol, one of the coal tar bases, to produce benzyl chloride.

It is then only necessary to brominate the benzyl cyanide by treating it with bromine vapor.

This chloride is then mixed with sodium cyanide in alcoholic solution and distilled, benzyl cyanide being the result.
